Spectacular submarine landscapes - the bubbling reefs.
Methane seeps in shallow waters in the northern Kattegat off the Danish coast form spectacular submarine landscapes - the bubbling reefs - due to carbonate-cemented sandstone structures which are colonized by brightly colored animals and plants.
The structures is more than 500 m2 in area and consist of pavements, complex formations of overlying slab-type layers, and pillars up to 4 meters high !
The site is World unique due to the shallow water, only a few other places are bubbling reefs known to science, in the Gulf of Mexico at ca. 2000 m depth and in the North sea between 74 to 245 m depth, here in the Northern Kattegat, the bubbling reefs is in only 10-12 m depth !
